This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and characteristics of Listeria spp. isolated from fish and shellfish collected at Pohang and Youngduk in 1996. A total 114 samples including cockle clam, sea mussel, squid, half beak, conger eel and flounder were examined. 46 samples (44.2%) were positive for Listeria spp. and Listeria monocytogenes, Listeria innocua and Listeria seeligeri were isolated in samples. 16 (14.0%) isolates were Listeria monocytogenes, 25 (21.1 %) were Listeria innocua and 5 (4.4%) were Listeria seeligeri. All of the isolates were resistant to cephalothin, erythromycin but susceptible to clindamycin, peniciliin G, tetracycline, vancomycin. The optimal temperature and initial pH for the growth of Listeria monocytogenes were 35¡40¡É and 7.0, respectively. Cell growth was strongly inhibited by NaCl at the concentration over 5%. To prevent the listeriosis, man should eat the boiled or heated sea foods instead of raw state sea foods.
